Lee District Nights 2011 Program...

If my son had his way, our house would be playing Ska Music all the time. He'll have to settle for the Pietasters June 22, but you can hear other kinds of music, too, every Wednesday all summer at

A Great Excuse to Drink Sangria

To drink Sangria!

TC Williams Crew Fundraiser - Monday, May 9, 2011 - 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Mention TC Crew when being seated 10% will go to support TC crew.

Los Tios Grill - 2615 Mount Vernon Ave. - Alexandria, VA 22301 - 703-299-9290

I suggest that as tempting as the large Sangria looks, drinking it quick enough to keep the ice from melting invites a tipsy brain freeze. Better to get two small ones. The food is good, servings are generous and the place is very kid friendly. If you get there early enough you can sit outside and tie the dog to the outside railing.

Since I’m pushing neighborhood restaurants – if you can’t get seated at Los Tios – head down the Bombay Curry Company – just four blocks away

GO TC!!

Explore@NASA Goddard

On Saturday, May 14, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (rain or shine),
NASA Goddard will open its gates and welcome families from across the
region to witness the great work we do. Explore@NASA Goddard will
offer over 100 activities to our guests to enjoy and learn from. In
addition to these amazing opportunities to experience science,
engineering and technology, and to meet those of us who work here, we
will offer an abundance of food and entertainment choices for all. Our
scientists, engineers and technologists will be on hand with members
of Goddard’s education and public engagement community to provide lots
of exciting hands-on activities and to provide tours of many of our
unique facilities. We will also have a Science Café and Science on a
Sphere  shows featuring demonstrations and dynamic speakers.

In addition, we will have science shows and engaging activities from
Mad Science and the Franklin Institute, along with a Build the Future
event, sponsored by LEGO®.

Our feature stage performance will be the Grammy Award-winning,
internationally renowned, all-woman, African-American a cappella
ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock®.  They will woo us with their
diverse collection of songs inspired by several styles including
Blues, African chant, jazz, spiritual and gospel, rap, reggae, and Hip
Hop. Melodic tunes will be performed by Goddard’s own a cappella
superstars, The Chromatics. Come listen as they deliver a unique blend
of cover songs and science originals. Milkshake, the adult band that
plays kids rock, will entertain us with original songs composed for
PBS KIDS and Discovery Kids.  More local entertainers will also be a
part of the event, and our very own DJ Scientific, Mark Branch, will
be on hand playing a variety of hits throughout the day.

In keeping with the festival atmosphere, there will be tasty treats
for everyone. In addition to roaming ice cream trucks (Scoops2U and
Kona Ice), we will also have delicious food sure to satisfy a variety
of cravings. Our food vendor lineup includes Bayside Bull BBQ; Red,
Hot, & Blue; Pepper Jack Grille; Funtastic Foods; Little Jimmy’s Fun
Foods; Keith's Treats & Eats; Margaret’s Soul Food, KBQ Real Barbeque,
The Food Station, and Dippin’ Dots.

Charm City Cakes, the bakery featured on TLC’s hit show, Ace of Cakes,
will present an extraordinary creation in a special tribute to NASA in
honor of the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight and the 30th year
of NASA’s space shuttle program. Local dessert master, Chef Lou, of
Chef Lou’s Desserts in Old Greenbelt, will also join in on the
celebration. Both bakeries will offer free sweet treats to the first
2,500 guests!

You get the idea. This event is more than an ordinary day at Goddard.
Come out, bring all of your family and friends, and see for yourself!

Finally, WE NEED YOUR HELP! We expect thousands of people to share in
this exciting day. Event staffers are still needed. General support is
needed during the afternoon and all-day shifts. Sign up now, and we
promise it will be a memorable experience! Lunch, snacks and other
perks will be included! Contact Maria Acevedo-Rivera
